MFS - Stafford Moor - Silvers Festival, 2nd March 2017

The curry night was a blast, we had 76 Trombones ordering the hottest curry they could cook, John “I’ve got a naan bread on my head” Beasley to ickle Wayne “I don’t like onions or tomatoes”. Needless to say there were a few different smells in the tackle shop this morning!

The Draw
I’d been nominated by Herbie to draw for our lake. Wonderful, I could be a hero if I drew anything but Woodpecker… of course I drew Woodpecker much to the “delight” of my section members. Quite a few abusive comments would come my way throughout the day, all tongue in cheek of course!

I drew Peg 10 on Woodpeckers, one of the better pegs which made me even more popular!

Set-Up
I broke out the waggler rod and set up the following pole lines were
  • 13 metre lines straight ahead and towards the island 
  • 4 metre line
All-In
Feeding a ball of groundbait on each long line I started on the waggler in the white water behind and between my two long pole lines. A fruitless 30 minutes followed but hey, the weather was a lot better today plus I had the wind off my back.

Onto the 13 metre line towards the island I start to connect with the fish using expander pellet on the hook. I found that a change to dead red maggot still produced the fish but with the added bonus of the hookbait being a bit more durable.

After 10 minutes I swapped to the long pole line ahead of me with the same dead red maggot. The fish were there also, so I decided to rotate my lines, feeding a golfball of groundbait on one line while fishing the other and vice versa.

After a few hours I’d managed to keep the catch rate going however the fish were very small so I made the decision to feed the island line heavily and leave it until the last hour for any larger fish.

As normal I’d been dripping some casters in on the short line so decided to take a look with a double caster hookbait. A few roach came to the net but then a bonus fish graced me with it’s presence, a lovely tench of around 2lb. The short line had come alive, well, kind of… I was having to wait a lot longer for bites on this line but the fish were of much better quality.

I had a few looks on the long “cooker” line but soon returned and fished the match out on the short line. The obligatory carp came along later in the day which is too be expected as they had been crashing around the margins most of the day in the spring sunshine.

Result
13lb 5oz 2nd on lake and a pick up at last

Conclusion
The short line changed the match for me. Those bonus fish pushed my weight up. The waggler produced nothing and the long pole lines while getting fish, they were a small reward for fishing so long out. A great lake win by Al Rutherford who had around 60 small skimmers from multiple lines to pip me to the post.

In a break from the normal commercials and after sorting all the the fishing gear out and finding a load of distance feeders that simply had not been used I decided it was time to tackle a large, wild water close to me. Searching YouTube and finding some videos by Jamie Harrison and Lee Kerry, Lake Semerwater became the target.  I roped in Patrick from work and Mr Curry an old friend I've not seen for quite some years.  The target was set, the prep was done and it was a very early start from sunny Stockton to drive to the beautiful Wensleydale and Lake Semerwater. Arriving at the farmhouse for 6am and catching up with Rich we headed down to the parking areas to be treated to fish in the shallows and a fabulous morning view. Patrick arrived about 30 minutes later and we tackled the bumpy 100 metre walk to where the stream fed into the lake. Renny Lakes, East Harlsey, 14th May 2023

Well the second trip out in 2023, the first one didn’t go as planned, I didn’t take to many photographs we didn’t catch any fish and I didn’t write a blog post about it… sorry about that. So the fishing whatsapp group voted for a day on Renny Lakes which didn’t mean too much of a long drive for Mr Curry or the rest of us. I’d also invited Sam along, Sam last fished back in 2016 so a great chance for him to get hooked a second time so to speak! The Pegs Renny Lakes has changed from a three lake complex back to two lakes. So a quick walk round the larger lake we found three pegs next to each other with islands and open water to go at. Set-Up I’d brought two rods with me for a simple days fishing while coaching Sam. A waggler rod and a feeder rod with a micro hybrid feeder on. Lake Semerwater, Wensleydale, 13th November 2022

After a very enjoyable trip in May and Jack wanting to learn a bit of feeder fishing together with the weather for November looking pretty good, our little fishing group headed back to Wensleydale and the fantastic Lake Semerwater.  The only one missing was Mr Curry who was on a promise?!   Watching the weather in the lead-up to the weekend it was looking like a great day ahead, overcast, no rain, constant air pressure however maybe a little windy. The Sunday morning drive to get to the lake for first light was very foggy with some rain, had the weather got it wrong? The Pegs Arriving at the lake, it looked fantastic, the water level was a lot higher than the May trip and there was a clear “tide” mark higher up the bank where the level had been some days before.  There was already a pike angler in the area that we wanted to fish however enough room between him and the river inlet for us to get two boxes in the water without disturbing each other.  Set-up When I gr
